Last weekend was a wonderful opportunity for our church family to rest, enjoy each other’s company, worship, and celebrate our roots. We spent Friday evening and Saturday at Camp Oak Hill in Oxford, NC. The cold and rain did not hinder warm fellowship and praise to our Lord Jesus Christ.
Friday night, after everyone had their fill of chili, Donnie led us in music around the fireplace. Tony gave a short biography of Martin Luther, the iconic monk that sparked the Protestant Reformation. Luther’s persistent, undying, passionate pursuit of God’s truth in His Scriptures is always encouraging.
Tony highlighted the unsettled nature of Luther’s heart as he considered God’s righteousness. Luther could not accept the idea that one could merit God’s favor through good works –– not even a zealous monk’s good works! He knew righteousness must come from somewhere else. Luther discovered in the book of Romans that righteousness is found in Jesus Christ alone. This is the core of the Gospel and the heritage that Imago Dei seeks to represent. We ended the night by watching Luther, the movie based on the 16th century Reformer’s life.
Saturday morning was the perfect time to reflect on the principles that grounded the Reformation, especially Sola Scriptura. (The Scriptures alone are sufficient for the salvation and holiness of God’s people.) We spent the remainder of the day hanging out, enjoying the weather, playing games, and getting to know each other better.
